Property tax cap - Governor Paterson’s property tax cap proposal passed by a vote of 38-to-20 with all negative votes being cast by Democratic senators largely from New York City. Under the plan, school district budgets would be limited to no more than 4-percent growth, or 120 percent of inflation. Critics, including the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT), say the bill is simply a gimmick. NYSUT has launched a costly and aggressive advertising campaign against the plan. The Assembly too has expressed little support for the bill. The most recent statewide poll shows 69 percent of New Yorkers support the property tax cap. Last month, NYSAR issued a press release urging lawmakers to return to Albany to pass the bill.
